The major grapes for the reds and rosés

Le grenache noir

This great Provençal grape is the cornerstone of all the red and rosé wines in southern France, and for certain fruity rosés. It stands up well to the wind and drought. Its alcoholic and aromatic potential, and its balanced tannins, make it very useful in the making of high-quality red wines. It results in moreish, ample wines, but also provides great finesse and elegance. And, lastly, it confers those superb aromas of liquorice, spices, red fruits, cocoa, prunes…

Syrah

A variety unique to the southern Rhône Valley, Syrah is increasingly used in the blend of southern Côtes du Rhône wines. It prefers a mild, consistent climate. This very expressive grape produces wines of wide-ranging aromatic character: the fragrance of violets, leather and blackcurrants… In addition, it contributes a strongly intense colour and an attractive tannin structure.

Mourvèdre

Very thirsty for heat and light, it is typically planted close to the Rhône’s bank and in the hot interior lands. When added to the blend, it flatters the traditional southern varieties such as Grenache Noir and Cinsault. It gives wines notes of the undergrowth, truffles, super-ripe fruits and liquorice, as well as an excellent tannic profile.

Cinsault

A variety renowned for its finesse and elegance. It gives of its best when crop yields are low. Generally used in a blend with Grenache Noir and Syrah, it offers great aromatic riches and a lovely creamy mouthfeel. Particularly good in rosé.
