Lirac, a wine in 3 colors.
The vines of Lirac, arranged in terraces and on hillsides,
nestle on the right bank of the Rhône,
facing the plantations of Châteauneuf-du-Pape over the river.
In this location in the southern Rhône Valley, the vines form
a ring of 1,200 hectares (about 3,000 acres) deep in the garrigue
scrubland of the Gard and of the Roman ruins. They fill a broad swathe
of land that extends over four administrative communes: Lirac, Roquemaure,
Saint-Laurent- des-Arbres and Saint-Geniès-de-Comolas.
The Lirac plantations currently cover 715 hectares (about 1,800 acres),
and produces about 25,000hl per year.
Lirac cuts a distinctive dash because
it is the oldest wine in the Côtes du Rhône region, and
is produced in three colours: red, rosé and white.
This distinguishing feature is due to the diversity of the soils and
grape varieties in the production area.
